Giving and Receiving: Yes, the Holidays are Upon Us!
Thanksgiving is in the rearview mirror and tonight is the 8th and final night of Chanukah. Then we slide into Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years and Three Kings Day. Whew! That's a lot of celebrating.
To help you out, I have some links in the News You Can Use section that contain gifting ideas and a list of queer holiday films for when you want to hit the couch and chill.
And don't forget your year-end giving to the organizations you support.
I hope (please! please! please!) that you'll remember the Golden Crown Literary Society, which is holding its $20k for 20 Years campaign to kick-off its 20th anniversary in 2024. GCLS is the only national organization focused on literature about lesbian/bi+/t women and NB folks. You can donate online at www.goldencrown.org/donate. Any amount you give will help meet the $20k challenge, including a year's worth of your monthly donations.
Oh, one more thing: I'll be publishing a second newsletter this month with my Best Books of 2023 list. Some were published this year, while many are from my very long TBR pile from years gone by. Five of these were featured recently on the "I Heart SapphFic" site. Stay tuned for the rest.

Your Character’s Faith (or Lack Thereof) – Writer Unboxed
I think the status of religion as a third rail in fiction is largely premised on the possibility it will not be handled well—specifically, that writers will do a disservice to one group of readers or another by identifying a character’s sect.
Worse, it’s feared that the writer, consciously or unconsciously, will show favor to one denomination over another.
That’s not just a failure of technique. It’s a failure of imagination and empathy.
Your Manuscript Has Been Edited By Top Professionals—But You Still Get Rejected. What Gives? | Jane Friedman
There are three reasons your book is getting rejected:
The query isn’t selling the book or your professionalism. The book feels dated (despite the argument in the query that it’s in tune with current events). In the first 25 pages, as the story flickers to life, it’s drowned in an ocean of backstory.

She’s aiming to create a pipeline for fiction featuring racially diverse and L.G.B.T.Q. protagonists, as well as characters living with disabilities, and who come from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds, to convince publishers that those stories can be commercial blockbusters. She works exclusively with writers from marginalized communities, and aims to give her authors a fair cut of the pay, and the tools to have their own careers.
